EDITOR'S NOTES
Another year looms, but with no midwinter boost from footie to look forward to! Ouch. But hopefully everyone had a decent holiday time, and is well refreshed for the task ahead. Have you noticed the strong movement back to the Cape of the younger and not so young past émigrés? Endless appalling weather and poor job prospects elsewhere are no doubt strong motivators, as well as the fact that this can be one heck of a good place to live! But, I hear the same refrain from them as from inbound tourists-with the strong rand, our prices are too high and we are rapidly losing the “value destination” tag. There are of course pockets of value for the overseas types-many restaurants come to mind-but the refrain seems to be pretty strong. For outbound, it's the other side of the coin, though it still seems that a pint in London costs the equivalent of a whole round here!
At the time of writing this, our Vice President Vernon Kirsten is in hospital after a nasty car accident. He escaped with some painful but fortunately not life threatening injuries, and the Committee has been in constant touch, wishing him well and a speedy recovery.
In March we will be having our AGA, so please plan for that-a good turnout is much appreciated by your hard working committee! And, please put your hand up if you would like to join the Committee-we do lots, but also enjoy ourselves.
See you around

SKÅL INTERNATIONAL
Skål, founded 1934, is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry's managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest , AND doing business amongst friends. |
NEW VENUES
If you have an idea for an interesting venue for lunch or anything else, do please mention it to a Committee Member. We are spreading ourselves around quite nicely, but new venues are always welcome. We now also include Golf Course management as well as restaurateurs involved in the tourist trade-we are pleased to have a couple of the latter now joining us.
BRANDING
 |
The corporate BRANDING sales are going very well-the concept allows members to promote themselves at a low
|
| cost while helping to keep general subs down, so its all good. But, to make it successful, sponsors will need your support. |
YOUNG SKÅL
 |
Nothing to report so far this year except that its still growing! |

MEETINGS
DECEMBER CHRISTMAS LUNCH
The Mount Nelson served up a sumptuous buffet and members were incredible generous with prizes, as well as when purchasing tickets. The result was a huge raffle money pool, which enabled us to write some healthy cheques to charities-including DARG, Home of Hope and the Florimond Volckaert Fund.

ECO AWARDS
 |
The Committee-or most of it anyway-recently drove an hour up the West Coast to Ikwattu to present the Skal International Eco Award to the manager, Michael Daiber. We had a super lunch followed by a guided tour of the medicinal plant gardens, enjoying a hot and windy day. Lots of photos were taken-but now we must look ahead and find some entries for the 2011 Awards! |
